Double Top Dollar Quick Verdict

COG Score 4.1 /5

Is this game cool?

I still enjoy traditional 3-reel slots with classic symbols, but the cool factor is down to the way a retro style blends with exciting features. Wild multipliers and a bonus round where you pick or reject cash offers make this a game I return to many times.

Is this game old?

Definitely. Double Top Dollar dates back to the early 2000s, making it more than 20 years old. Its predecessor, Top Dollar, is even older, and the game's rather interesting history is covered in more detail below.

About the Online Double Top Dollar Slot

Genre 3 Reel Slot
Developer IGT
RTP 96.24%
Volatility Medium High
Min/Max Bet $0.05 / $200
Max Win 4,000x
Reels 3
Paylines 9

Slots filled with cherries, BAR emblems, and red 7s have been around for many years. The Double Top Dollar slot machine from IGT is a classic example of this. These symbols land on a 3-reel, 3-row matrix with 9 paylines crossing from the left. It’s a traditional setup that will be familiar to anyone who has played classic reel machines at a land-based casino.

Did you know? The game’s predecessor from the 1990s, Top Dollar, was originally a Barcrest game. IGT then acquired Barcrest1 and launched Double Top Dollar in the early 2000s. Eventually, Barcrest was sold again, this time to Scientific Games (now Light & Wonder)2. However, IGT retained the IP rights for the game. Then, in 2025, the game was brought online (finally!) as part of the IGT PlayDigital range.3

The game is known for wild multipliers and a thrilling multi-stage bonus round where you get to accept or reject offers. Wins can hit 4,000x the bet from this medium-high volatility game, and it comes with generous average returns of 96.24%.

If you enjoy the sights and sounds of classic machines, then you can play the free version on this page.

A Look at the Game Mechanics

IGT have retained the simple graphics and layout that made Double Top Dollar such a hit at physical casinos around the world. Single, double, and triple BARs, bright cherries, and a bold red 7 are the standard symbols, along with wild double diamonds and the game logo that can trigger the bonus round.

It also retains the fast-paced electronic jingle sound effects that you get with many land-based slots, and you’ll either appreciate the link to the original game or find it annoying. One of the many advantages of playing slots online is that you can mute the soundtrack, and I did this within a couple of seconds.

The demo Double Top Dollar slot on this page costs nothing, and there’s no commitment at all. There’s a wide bet range of 0.10 to 200.00, which makes it suitable for all except the highest rollers. Whatever your chosen stake, you always play with 10 coins.

Symbol Combinations & Payouts

With the retro looks comes a classic arrangement of 3 reels, 3 rows, and 9 paylines. Here’s a table of how many times the total bet you win when symbols land on a line:

SymbolPayout
Any Combination of BAR SymbolsX0.5
One CherryX0.2
Two CherriesX0.5
Three CherriesX1
Single BAR x3X1
Double BAR x3X2
Triple BAR x3X4
Red 7s x3X8
Double Diamonds x3X80

How the WILD Symbol Works

The double diamonds (a symbol you may already know from the Double Diamond slot) not only pay the highest prize when matched right across a payline, but also act as a wild symbol that can stand in for BARs, cherries, and 7s to create extra winning combinations.

  • If a single wild is part of the win, the base value is doubled.
  • If 2 wilds land on a payline, the prize value of the remaining symbol is quadrupled.

Wilds can’t substitute for the game logo, though.

The Double Top Dollar Bonus Explained

If the game logo lands on the right-side reel, it triggers the main Double Top Dollar slot bonus feature, where you can win as much as 4,000x the bet.

It plays out on a new screen where you see 9 cash rewards worth 100, 150, 200, 250, 400, 500, 750, 1,000, and 10,000 coins, which equals a range of 10x to 1,000x the total bet.

When I triggered the bonus, it brought me to a new screen. This screen represents the top display as seen on the land-based cabinet. It’s a clever way to make the feature work online as well.

One or more random values are then highlighted, and 1 or 2 multipliers, each of 2x can appear. You can then either click a red “Take Offer” button to collect the prize, or tap the blue “Try Again” button and the game highlights new values. This can repeat up to 3 more times, after which you automatically win the final offer.

There’s a useful strategy guide in the paytable:

  • If the first offer is worth more than 1,510 coins, you should take it.
  • Collect the second if it has a value of 1,380 or more.
  • If the third offer pays at least 1,200 coins, you should collect the prize

But results will vary, so I would just use this as a general guide rather than see it as strict rules.

Volatility & RTP Comparison

The Double Top Dollar slot machine has a medium to high level of volatility, so over time, it tends to pay slightly less often than average, but prizes can be slightly higher to compensate. This can be way up or down over the course of a typical session on the game, and I saw quite long runs of losing spins, then several wins in a row, which is entirely normal for a mid to high variance slot.

The return to players of 96.24% is actually good for a game with this level of volatility, and like all IGT titles, Double Top Dollar always plays fair. When I compared the RTP to other 3-reel classics by IGT, it comes out on top. For example, Triple Red Hot 777 has an RTP of 96.13%, Triple Diamond sits at 95.06%, and Red White & Blue only has an RTP of 93.98%.

How to Start Playing the Double Top Dollar Online

Unsure where to start? Just follow these steps for the smoothest, hassle-free introduction to the game.

Step 1: Practice in Demo Mode at CoolOldGames

The best way to start out with the Double Top Dollar slot machine is via the free game right on this page. You don’t need to download anything to your desktop device or mobile, and there’s no need to register. The free demo slot has all of the options that you get with the real version, including full screen mode, and you can top up your virtual balance by reloading the game as many times as you want.

Step 2: Find Your Favorite Settings

It’s time to master the controls without risk, using the up and down arrow buttons to select a virtual bet level, and seeing how much symbols pay when matched across any of the 9 lines. Read through the paytable for further details on symbol values and how features lead to extra prizes. You also have the option to activate Autoplay and Quick Spin settings to see how these offer hand-free gameplay and faster results.

Step 3: Keep Watch for Bonus Symbols

Focus on the features, including wilds with multipliers, and the bonus game, where you accept or reject prize offers. I saw wilds on many occasions, although triggering the main feature can be harder, and unfortunately, there’s no option to buy into the round. When I did finally hit it, I settled for a 1,100 offer, as seen in the screenshot below.

I took the 1100 offer. With a bet size of 1.00, that resulted in an 11.00 win (11x)

Arthur’s Verdict on the Double Top Dollar by IGT

Double Top Dollar is unusual, as the transition from a land-based to an online game has not only seen ownership change hands, but it also ports the original offer display over really well, using a separate screen that keeps the feel of the land-based machine. That, in combination with the wild multipliers and the bonus round, really makes it stand out from other older 3-reel steppers.

In my opinion, it is suited to players who enjoy classic symbols matched to a small but satisfying range of bonuses. I particularly enjoyed the bonus game, as once triggered, a win is guaranteed. With luck, you cash out with the best possible amount and highest multipliers, but remember that if you reject an offer, the following ones could be worth less.

I like the vintage style and find that the game remains enjoyable even after repeated sessions, but the classic layout won’t suit everyone. It may not suit you if more paylines, free spins, respins, or jackpots are your thing, and the symbol mix may be just too old-fashioned for some. Either way, here on CoolOldGames, it fits right in!
