Spartacus: Gladiator of Rome by WMS is the slot that put “Colossal Reels” on the map. We’ve seen it installed on the iconic Bluebird carbinets in Vegas and in regional U.S. casinos for years. It’s one of those cabinets we always check the row for when we’re feeling lucky, nostalgic…and brave.

The online game was launched in 2013 and built around a dual reel set including a regular 5×4 grid on the left, and an oversized 5×12 grid on the right. WMS took the simple idea of stacked wilds and added a transfer mechanic that sends those stacks across to the bigger grid for genuinely massive lines.

A fun fact is that Spartacus was popular enough to be released as a standalone Windows PC game on disc in 2015, distributed by Phantom EFX. Not many slots make it onto a retail shelf.

You can play the free Spartacus slots demo (including all the sequels) online at CoolOldGames.com with no download or sign-up needed. Load it instantly and watch the wilds transfer.

The dual reels, in combination with the theme, give a powerful vibe in our opinion. It might feel a bit overwhelming for first-time players, however.

Advantages of Playing Spartacus for Free at Cool Old Games

Spartacus has two reel sets, 100 paylines, and multiple unique features. That’s a lot more going on than most slots. So free play is a great way to learn what’s actually happening on screen before you put money behind it:

  • See the wild-transfer mechanic in action.
  • Get used to reading two reel sets at once: Wins on the Main and Colossal grids.
  • Play on any device, in your browser, with no account or email required

We suggest you open the bet selector in the demo and look at the structure. The “0.01 per 2 lines” framing trips up new players. It’s effectively half a cent per line, not one cent. Knowing that up front saves you from accidentally five-stepping your way to a much bigger bet than you intended.

How It Works: Mechanics Explained

Spartacus uses a dual reel layout with:

  1. A Main Reel Set of 5×4 (so 20 visible positions on the left)
  2. A Colossal Reel Set of 5×12 (60 visible positions on the right)

The two reel sets share 100 configurable paylines, but pays on each set are evaluated independently. It’s important to know that line wins don’t carry across from one to the other.

Every reel uses stacked symbols. Before each spin, a number of adjacent positions on each reel get randomly replaced with the same symbol from the paytable (any symbol except the FEATURE scatter). That’s why stacks of wilds, gladiators, and lions land so often. They’re built into the reel structure, and it’s not coincidental.

When playing, we found that partial wild stacks with three out of four positions filled far more often than the full four-of-four that triggers the transfer.

Symbols & Payouts

The reels split into two camps:

  1. Lower-paying card suits (hearts, clubs, diamonds, spades) and higher-paying themed symbols.
  2. The high-pays include the male and female gladiators, a roaring lion, a Spartan helmet, and a sword-and-shield emblem.

The Spartacus Gladiator of Rome logo is the WILD, and the Colosseum is the FEATURE scatter.

Payouts in the table below shown for 5, 4, and 3 of a kind “×” columns are multiples of your bet per 2 lines (bet-independent). Cash columns show the actual game values at the 0.01-per-2-lines minimum.

Wins are evaluated per reel set on adjacent reels from the left; only the highest win pays per combination on each set.

Bonus Features Explained

Spartacus has two interlocking mechanics that do most of the work. These are the wild transfer and the free spins round. They’re tied together by the same idea, which is that a stack on the left becomes a column on the right.

Wild Transfer

If you land four stacked WILDs on a single reel of the Main Reel Set, covering all four positions then the stack “transfers” to the Colossal Reel Set. This turns the entire corresponding reel, including all 12 positions, into wild.

All pays are evaluated after the transfer, meaning a single transfer can convert what looked like a modest spin into a full grid of wilds. The wild transfer is what makes this game, and keeps players interested.

The wild transfer has a distinct audio cue and a brief sweep across the reel sets before line wins are evaluated. You may be tempted to hit spin again as soon as the reels stop, but the transfer is where the actual payoff lands.

Free Spins

Land three or more FEATURE (Colosseum) scatters across both reel sets to trigger free spins. The trigger has three tiers, and the higher tiers are generous:

  • 3 scatters = 8 free spins + 2x total bet
  • 4 scatters = 12 free spins + 5x total bet
  • 5 or more scatters = 20 free spins + 20x total bet

In our experience, the 3-scatter trigger is by far the most common. You can expect it to land several times before you see the 5-scatter tier. Plan around the 8-spin round, not the 20-spin one. When the bigger tier does trigger, it’s a real moment to enjoy.

Wild Nudges During Free Spins

The free spins round amplifies the wild mechanic. If even one WILD from a stack lands on a reel of the Main Reel Set, the rest of the stack nudges into place to fill all four reel positions. It then transfers to the Colossal Reel Set as a fully wild reel.

This is the difference between Spartacus’s free spins and most other slots’ free spins. You’re not just hoping for a big spin but stacking the math toward one.

Retriggers

3 or more FEATURE scatters during free spins add more free spins to your remaining count. Bet per line and active paylines stay the same as the triggering spin throughout.

Volatility & RTP – What to Expect

The slot has a 95.94% RTP which fits within the modern average range. It’s slightly under the 96% benchmark that newer releases tend to hit.

We feel this has medium-high volatility. In Spartacus, we found the base game to run quietly for stretches, but then a single wild transfer turns the Colossal grid into a wall of wilds (with meaningful multiples on your bet).

The free spins round is where the real swings live. When combined with the nudge mechanic, it can produce some of the bigger wins in classic WMS history.

Tip: We suggest starting with a session bankroll of at least 100x your base bet. Decide your stop-loss before you start, and stick to it. We’ve found that a Spartacus session usually has 100–200 quiet base spins for every wild transfer or bonus trigger. If you’re trying the demo, give yourself 20–30 minutes to get a real feel of the game.

How to Play Spartacus Slots Online

Step 1: Play the Free Demo on Cool Old Games

Load Spartacus directly in your browser. There’s no download or registration needed. The game runs full-screen if you want it to, the reload button is right there, and it’s compatible with any modern browser on Windows, Mac, iOS, or Android. Demo-play is the best way to practice without pressure.

Step 2: Configure the Lines and Your Bet

Spartacus uses 100 adjustable paylines, and the bet structure is 0.01 per two lines (so 100 lines = a 0.50 minimum total bet).

You can adjust the line count and the per-2-line bet from the controls at the bottom. You can play either 20, 40, 60, 80, or all 100 paylines.

Start small, as from our experience, Spartacus rewards longer sessions, and the wild transfer takes a while to land.

Step 3: Scan the Reels for Stacked Wilds

The mechanic to watch for is a stack of WILDs covering all four positions on a single reel of the Main Reel Set. That’s the trigger for the transfer. You’ll see partial stacks land often; three out of four wilds, two out of four, full stacks of gladiators or lions instead of wilds, but the four-of-four wild stack is what flips the Colossal grid.

Step 4: Track FEATURE Scatters on Reels 1, 3, and 5

The free spins trigger only counts FEATURE (Colosseum) scatters on reels 1, 3, and 5 on either reel set. Reels 2 and 4 don’t carry the scatter, so you can ignore those when scanning. Watch both reel sets together as the scatters across both grids count toward the total.

Step 5: Play for Real Money Online

When you’re ready to play Spartacus slots for real money, you’ll find the game and its sequels at major US online casinos in regulated states

If your preferred casino doesn’t carry WMS (part of Light & Wonder) slots, the gladiator/Roman-themed slot category is well-stocked on most casino and sweepstakes sites. You can, for example, check out the following titles:

  • Gladiator by Betsoft
  • Almighty Sparta by Endorphina
  • Eye of Spartacus Pragmatic Play

Disclaimer: Online gambling is age-restricted (21+ in most US states). Always confirm legality in your jurisdiction, set a budget, and play responsibly. Help is available at 1-800-GAMBLER.

Overview of the Series and Sequels

Spartacus: Gladiator of Rome was successful enough that WMS turned it into a small franchise. Each sequel iterates on the Colossal Reels DNA in a slightly different direction. You’ll find bigger grids, bonus buys, different feature stacks, and sometimes a respin layer.

Online SlotNotes
Spartacus: Gladiator of RomeThe original, released in 2013
Spartacus Super Colossal ReelsBigger grid, mega wilds, golden wild respins, multipliers up to 100×, 96.76% RTP
Spartacus Wonder 500500-payline variant on the theme
Spartacus Legendary WarriorDifferent feature mix, same theme
Spartacus Call to ArmsMost recent variant in the line

Of the four sequels, Wonder 500 is the one we found least essential. The 500-payline structure dilutes the wild-transfer impact rather than amplifying it. The math works, but the slot loses what made the original feel distinctive. Super Colossal Reels and Legendary Warrior are the two sequels we’d reach for second.

The most interesting modern entry is Super Colossal Reels. It keeps the dual-reel-set DNA but layers on bigger wild mechanics and a higher RTP. It feels like a true sequel rather than a reskin. The original is still the cleanest version of the idea, though, and it’s the one to play first before checking out others.

There’s also the broader “gladiator slots” search theme, which spans Roman Empire and gladiator-themed slots from other studios. If that’s what brought you here, Pompeii by Aristocrat is a close cousin in spirit. It’s the same era, same Roman theme, similar mid-volatility play feel.

The Zeus slots series is WMS’s other historically themed heavy-hitter and worth a look if you’ve enjoyed their Spartacus slots.

What Players are Saying Online

Spartacus has more of a YouTube footprint than most classic WMS slots, and it’s the comments that give most first-hand input. The divide is similar to most classic WMS slots: people who like the wait-for-the-big-moment rhythm play it for years vs people who want a steady drip of features bounce off in the first few sessions.

What Players Like

The Colossal Reels mechanic is the recurring favorite. Players who stick with Spartacus describe the moment a stack of wilds transfers to the big grid as the reason they keep coming back. You can see this first-hand in a live high-limit session at $20 max bet.

It’s the kind of single-spin event that makes the whole session worth it. The free spins round has a reputation for paying when the higher tiers trigger.

  • The wild transfer creates a true “this could be the spin” feeling that few other slots match
  • The 5-scatter, 20-free-spin, 20x total bet trigger is one of the better entry-tier free spins bonuses in classic slots
  • The dual reel set keeps base game more interesting than a single 5×3 grid would

What Players Don’t Like

The biggest frustration is the gap between transfers. Watching almost-stacks land on the Main Reel Set without the fourth WILD is a recurring complaint, and the 3-scatter free spins tier (8 spins + 2x total bet) feels stingy compared to the 5-scatter tier.

The visuals show their age too. Spartacus is a 2013-era online build, and it looks like one next to modern releases.

  • Three-scatter trigger feels thin compared to the bigger tiers
  • Long stretches of base game between transfers can wear down patience
  • Dated graphics next to modern Roman-themed slots

Closing Thoughts: Who We Recommend the Free Spartacus Slot For

This is the slot that taught the industry what could happen if you stopped designing around a single grid. The wild transfer is one of the better mechanical ideas WMS has shipped.

The free Spartacus slot on this page is for anyone who wants to experience the slot that defined Colossal Reels without putting any money behind it.

The base game asks for patience, but for understanding why dual reel sets became one of WMS’s signature design moves, there’s no better starting point.

Great for:

  • Players who enjoy a true WMS Vegas classic
  • Fans of Roman or gladiator themes
  • Patient players who don’t mind a quiet stretch in exchange for a meaningful wild transfer or 20-free-spin trigger
  • Anyone curious about how Colossal Reels actually work in their original form

Maybe not ideal for:

  • Bonus hunters
  • Constant-feedback players who need every spin to feel like something
  • Players who want the freshest art and animation

If that lines up with how you like to play, give the demo a few sessions and see if the wild transfer earns its keep. If you want a modernized version of the same DNA, Spartacus Super Colossal Reels is the next stop.
