The Timber Wolf slot machine was originally introduced about 20 years ago, when the MK6 generation of Aristocrat platforms became popular in North America. These were Linux-based video slot cabinets, primarily installed in Las Vegas and tribal casinos across the United States.
Over the years, this slot has had a bunch of sequels. Including Timber Wolf Triple Power, Chief, Diamond, and a few more. Online, the available versions are Timber Wolf Gold and Triple Power. But to be honest, since we prefer old games here, nothing really beats the nostalgia of the original.
The online Timber Wolf demo is pretty much identical to the classic land-based machine and instantly recognizable. Snowy mountainous forest terrain, howling wolves, and a full moon. I find the theme quite appealing. Maybe it’s the pink tones contrasting with the snowy night sky that does it for me. Already convinced?

Game Mechanics – How it Works
Timber Wolf uses a standard 5×4 grid with 1,024 ways to win. You are not able to pick the number of paylines. Instead, it has the same Xtra Reel Power system as found on the online Buffalo slot by Aristocrat Interactive.
Symbols & Paytable
The symbols in this game match the overall theme very well. You’ll find a selection of animals that are closely associated with wolves. As well as some human elements with a forest cabin and a man in fur clothing. Furthermore, there are the classic symbols, K, Q, J, 10, and 9.
The exact symbols and the number of coins you can win per combination are as follows:
| Symbol | 3 of the Same | 4 of the Same | 5 of the Same |
|---|---|---|---|
| Owl (Scatter) | 200 | 800 | 2000 |
| Wolf | 70 | 180 | 525 |
| Man | 70 | 100 | 200 |
| Bear | 20 | 40 | 150 |
| Deer | 20 | 40 | 150 |
| Cabin/House | 10 | 30 | 150 |
| King (K) | 5 | 20 | 120 |
| Queen (Q) | 5 | 20 | 120 |
| Jack (J) | 5 | 20 | 100 |
| Ten (10) | 5 | 20 | 100 |
| Nine (9) | 5 | 20 | 100 |
How your winnings are calculated:
Total Win = (Paytable value) × (coin size) × (number of paylines hit)
- Let’s assume we select 0.50 as our coin size, for a total bet amount of 20
- We hit 5 King symbols on adjacent reels (rare)
- This means 120 x 0.50 x (number of paylines hit)
In the screenshot below, you can see it in action. I actually managed to hit 5 Kings on 4 paylines. So the result is:
120 x 0.50 x 4 = 240

Moon – Wild Symbol
The Moon symbol is the “wild” and substitutes for all symbols. You will only see it appear on reels 2 and 4.
Owl – Scatter Symbol
The Owl scatter symbol, as advertised in the paytable, delivers the highest potential payouts. These symbols are also your gateway to the free games. More about that below.
How the Free Games Feature Works
The Free Games Bonus is the most exciting part of Timber Wolf; this is the feature you want to activate. It triggers by hitting any Owl/Scatter win and awards you with 15 free games.
During the bonus rounds, you are able to retrigger the feature again. This is called a “respin”. It ends with that one. You cannot retrigger it another time.
The Moon symbols also have their role during the Free Games:
| If the Moon Symbol: | Win is Multiplied by: |
|---|---|
| Substitutes in a win on Reel 2 | 3 |
| Substitutes in a win on Reel 2 | 5 |
| Substitutes in a win on Reels 2 AND 4 | 15 |
Note that if the Moon symbol lands on reel 2 and/or 4 and does not form part of a winning combination, those reels will remain locked, while all other reels are respun once.
Volatility, RTP, and How it Feels
Timber Wolf’s online version has a return-to-player (RTP) of 94.67% with medium volatility. This is below the typical online slot average of around 96%, meaning the long-term payout is a bit lower than many modern slots (in theory).
Combined with medium volatility, the game should feel steady with regular small-to-medium wins. While playing myself, I was able to confirm this feeling. I managed to get a bunch of small wins fairly regularly, and it was quite hard to hit the really big wins. When they did hit, it felt very rewarding.
How to Play the Timber Wolf Slot Online
Step 1: Practice for free on Cool Old Games
Here at CoolOldGames.com, we believe that playing the free demo is the safest way to enjoy Timber Wolf. And any online slot, for that matter. It allows you to test the game and decide if you like how it plays and feels, without hurting your wallet.
To get started, simply scroll or swipe up and press the “Play for Free” button. Alternatively, you can use the Full Screen button for a more immersive experience.
Step 2: Experiment with Bet Sizing
Free-play is the perfect way to test with different bet sizes. It helps you understand bankroll management and how to maximize your playtime. Use the “+” and “-” buttons at the bottom of the game screen to size up or down. Coin size options range from 0.01 to 20.
Step 3: Hunt for the Owl to Unlock the Bonus Feature
As already mentioned before, the bonus feature is the pinnacle of Timber Wolf. It might take a while to trigger it. Luckily, when playing for free, you have unlimited demo credits. It’s a good way to decide if the average number of spins needed to trigger the bonus features is worth it for you.
There is another cool feature to look out for, however. When you manage to hit an “Unbelievable Win.” A large number of coins will scatter all over the screen.

Step 4: Play Timber Wolf Online for Real
Some players might get tired of playing the free version and are not in a position to go to a land-based venue. In that case, you could try playing online for real money. Just make sure not to play with more than you can afford to lose and to set strict limits.
It is important to note that the official online Timber Wolf slot by Aristocrat Interactive is only available in a handful of U.S. states and online casinos. While that is a bit of a bummer, there exist many Wolf-themed slots in a snowy setting. Almost every online casino, and even software provider, has them.
Some of them are actually quite decent. My favorite alternatives are:
- Wolf Moon Rising and 3 Pots of Lunar Wolf, both by Betsoft
- Night Wolf Frozen Flames by Spinomenal
Some other options are Wolf Rush by Woohoo and the Mythic Wolf series by Rival Gaming. Although I like those two a lot less.
Warning: it is crucial that you are of the legal gambling age in your state or jurisdiction and comply with all local laws. If you or someone close to you has a problem with gambling, reach out to 1-800-Gambler. See our responsible gaming page for more resources.
Conclusion – Is the Free Timber Wolf Slot For You?
Playing for free on Cool Old Games, in general, comes with a bunch of advantages. The flexibility of not having to travel and play from the comfort of your home is unbeatable. You’ll be able to keep spinning until you hit those 3 Owl symbols, without burning through your cash.
Lastly, if you don’t like to download an app or create an account, playing directly inside the browser is ideal.
The game itself might not be a fit for everyone. Based on my own experiences with Timber Wolf, I came to the conclusion below.
Who I think will appreciate this slot:
- You are nostalgic for those early 2000s machines.
- You enjoy a Wolves or snow theme.
- You don’t want to be bothered with selecting or even thinking about paylines.
- You prefer a relatively slow base game with one exciting bonus feature to look forward to
When you should maybe look for other options:
- If you need jackpots and modern bonus buy features to stay engaged.
- If configuring paylines is a must for you. In that case, Wolf Run by IGT might be an interesting alternative. Another classic with a similar theme, but with the option to tweak the lines.
- If you think the relatively low RTP of 94.67% is a deal-breaker.
